please help, confused
I have seen here and on other forums that feeding lettuce is quite common. I was told this should only be fed sparingly particularly with young tortoises due to its low nutritional content.
I am rather confused now and was wondering if this is correct, or if not what kinds of lettuce are best please help! |

I give mine, romaine, radichio, little gem lettuce, baby leaf, wild rocket, watercress, at this time of year if i cant get no weeds i also sprinkle on dried weeds and flowers bought from the shelled warrior shop, they dont like dried weeds but i spray their food with water to ensure they stick and that means they get some weather they like it or not lol... role on spring i got weeds growing and weed seeds to plant x

'Standard lettuce' and cos have very little nutritional value - they're largely water. Romaine and gem lettuces are better as they have a higher fibre content.
In a perfect world, we'd feed only weeds, but the world isn't perfect at this time of year (and Joe has a large appetite). As a result, most of us use a mixture of whatever weeds we can find, perhaps some pellets a couple of times a week, some Romaine, little/red gem or bagged mixed leaf salad and some vitamin/mineral supplement until conditions improve. It's a long time since Joe was small, so others will comment on diet for very young torts.

I don't feed any lettuce at all. If I can't find weeds mine get pellets. In my opinion they are far better than lettuce.

Thanks for your help, I am going to try and get as natural a diet as I can, I do have some pellet food but Misha doesn't really eat is so far and is on some bagged (but not lettuce) like rocket and that sort and the dandelions which are starting to grow.
I have just got some weed seeds to grow so she should have a better diet soon (and some better lighting and heat control when it all arrives) also am planning to hibernate so hoping not to have to worry in the depths of winter (although she will be on bagged food in the time before and after when there is less available) |

In emergencies I've bought the florette mix but after a couple of times feeding it I chuck it out cos I notice the poo goes sloppy straight away so I feel really bad.
I occasionally get the little gem lettuce, they like it and their poo's dont go as sloppy quickly. I only feed lettuce if there is nothing else and to keep variation in diet. I dont like feeding pellets every day, I feed them once a week in winter but as soon as there is more plants I wont be feeding them at all. I have noticed with pellets they put on weight a lot more easily. |
