Question I've got a digger!

Hi Guy's,

I'm a newbie here and have just collected my (Daughters) new torty. She is a 4 year old Hermann's and just loves to dig. Is that normal? We came home tonight and she was completely covered with soil - just wanted to check this is "normal" behaviour. She's in a brand new torty table 40 x 20 x 15 inches. There is a Megaray 120w lamp at one end and a habbi hut/water at the other so all seems fine with the set up - I think. Yesterday she was happy in her hut but today she has started to dig. She is eating and regularly takes a walk through her water dish. Any comments appreciated.
Thanks

Hello, yes some of them do dig, mine don't dig indoors really and only a bit outdoors. If your temperatures are too cold they might dig, maybe even if too hot as well.

Edit.. by the way are you 100% sure it is a Hermanns? People are often told it's one thing then it turns out to be another, there was someone recently even had a A10 certificate and it was still the wrong tort. Horsefields tend to be more for digging than Hermanns generally

Pretty sure she's a Hermann's - there are 2 horsefields next door and she looks a bit different to those. Thanks to you all for replying over Christmas. I'll post some piccies on the "indoor housing" thread.
BTW temps range from 95f (under lamp) to about 65f at the other end of the enclosure.

One of my hermanns loves to dig the other two not as much, it can be a nightmare trying to find her when they are out. Give us an idea what your temps are like at hot and colder ends of table just to be sure it's not too hot.

I saw the pics on housing thread, it does look like a Hermanns

My baby Horsfield Teddy loves to dig, when its bed time, its dig down time!! Ive watched her dig like mad kicking all the soil away, and then covering herself hehe..I guess its like having the duvet over you lol...And climbing! well she loves to climb the rocks and she also tries to climb the sides of the enclosure lol

Great fun Tortoises, I absoloutely love her!!!
