it doesn,t pay to be open and honest on this forum because unless you conform and do as the rest you are considered in the wrong and pounced upon several members owned up to using them on the odd occassion in the chatroom but obviously daren,t say so on here which is a real shame.

I too have some of the dreaded coloured pellets. Their strong smell and colour can sometimes be tempting to a very sick tort that is being rehabilitated. I would never use them as part of the normal diet though, just as I would not give chocolate to my dogs and coca cola to my grandchildren other than as a ploy to see if they were having me on or not

It's easier... less time consuming... better balance of nutritional components... in my experience the animals seem to do much better than they do on a green diet and if you don't have access to weeds it is actually cheaper.

Lets see now... The American SW when there are water restrictions... oh heck... Georgia when there are water restrictions.

My 1/4 acre is down to bare earth from 9 tortoises. Only now is it starting to rain. Forget about collecting broad leaf weeds because there are none.

There's alot of stuff people take for granted.

Regardles, the growth on my animals is nothing short of wonderful.

Obviously this is where the differences between the US and UK come in. As if you look hard
enough in the UK there are plenty of weeds.
Pelleted food is not only high in proteins, but highly addictive and will choose them over a

For the sake of the new tortoise keeper... The diet I use is 15% protein... what is 'too high' a protein content and where does the number come from. Mazuri is formulated by an animal nutritionist (phd I believe). There is over 25 years of research into this diet and the product is still going strong.

You have to wonder why a tortoise would choose a pelleted diet over natural fare... I do.

Yeah, that is our one consolation! We've got high taxes and dreadful weather in the UK, but we are a weed paradise! It's easy to forget that in other countries most vegetation dries up and dies in the summer. There must be a middle ground <g>.

I am just glad to live in " old blighty " then just for the weeds !!!!! Cos all my guys LOVE them !!! we are very luck iam able to find at least 4-5 diffrent weeds a day !!! So glad its free food Although mums i see on the school run think iam the mad lady with the backpack whos always got her bum in the air !!!
