Default New Additions

We picked up 2 chickens at the weekend, one is I think called a White Leghorn and the other a Rhode Island Red, both are pets about 1 year old, the white one laid an egg on the way home in the van she has since laid another, we clipped their wings and I had them in the garden with me yesterday and they both went straight in the house you should have seen the look on charlie and millies faces, (Cockateils) anyway they came with a rather nice 6 x 4 shed which I'm going to use for the torts as the hens are in the old avairy, I spent yesterday linning it with polystyrene as insulation and its going to be split into 2 floor areas one side for the adults and the other the babies with a uv strip light and heat lamp in there, with 2 exit doors and the garden split in half to the shed I think it will be quite nice, we are going to heighten the fence on the old veg garden for the hens and give them a new house but they seem quite happy in the aviary for now, sorry forgot to add came from FREECYCLE

They can't be as freerange as I'd like else they'd be fox dinner and the white hen has the look of "road runner" and was also eyeing up the house roof so we'll have to have the fencing a lot higher than it is, the brown one is to fat and fluffy to go far, the area we are planning for them has a good fence but only the normal height so we will have to make it at least 3 foot higher, they don't like either cooked or raw veggies ( funny girls) but liked my pastry left overs ( cooked) they go in at night by themselves the first night leggy was sitting high up on one of the old avairy branches shes going to be trouble any other things that chicks like to eat? they have mash and mixed corn and a sprinkling of oystershell and grit, any thing I'm missing.

thats the side garden which is just for the torts they have half each, its the most secure one so the partition will run from the center of the shed to this side, bottom of picture, they already have their other houses and cold frames but I'm thinking of doing away with the kennels as they are difficult for me to get the roofs of and the shed has a door and a window so I'll be able to chase the lazy so and so's out on a sunny day

You could try them with cooked Spagetti and Rice. It is supposed to mimic worms and maggots yummy. Also porridge made with water and mashed potatoes mixed in with layers mash was always a favourite with ours
