ive just gone out to have a look at her. They are a lot shorter than yours probably because they run into the black markings and not as many. in the picture if you follow her (facing) right eye line up there is a tiny one I think just visible but they are v short. The bubbles are bottom scutes mostly back and white dote scattered too. ! Like nails they must just be superficial markings ? But I have never seen bubbles or lines on any of my other ones (they are two good names for tortoise too) CB !

Each tortoise has their own markings and this is what I think it looks like. Their shells are made of the same thing as our nails, so can get imperfections, and white marks etc.

I can't see them on Lettuce, as you say her shell is very dark.
Tetley may have had them for ages, it's just when I brought in he was really wet and they just seem to really stand out. I'm not worried, just wondered what they were. He's happy, eating being a real sod, as indoors, so all normal. Just really looked like blood vessels! Thanks for your replies. Obviously I'll keep an eye on him and them and any changes I'll seek advise. Thanks again xxx

Could be G.
I'll see what they look like tomorrow. They're having a night indoors as really cold and wet outside so maybe being warmer they won't show....
