Brand new - advice needed
Hello All,
Having just moved into a new place I am thinking about getting a pet. I have been thinking about a marginated tortoise. I'm having trouble working out whereabouts in London I could get one. And indeed what I would need to keep it, housing etc. Any chance of some advice? I literally have no clue so anything would be helpful Nat |

Ok well, not sure if theirs anywhere in london that sell them.. if not you may have to travel to get one. torts are great pets but require LOADS AND LOADS of research.. personally ive reacheached sooooo much... yet i still know hardly anything over the basics. but as for housing you need heat lamps, uv lights etc.. and depends wether the tort will be kept in or outdoors

ok, so it would be kept indoors. Am starting to research now, just wondering if anyone could give me a rough guide and also a rough cost would be useful.

Hi Nat, Would this be your first tortoise??
Just wondering if it is, why you have chosen a marginated? I have nothing against marginates, beautiful torts to keep. I only ask as I would think a Hermanns or an Ibera might be an easier first tortoise to keep. But I'm sure there lots of owners started like you.. Good luck xx |

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. It would be my first tort, just seemed to be the one I came across the most info on. Would a hermanns be a better bet then? Thanks Nat |

Hi Natty, all torts are great but it seems to me that Hermanns and Horsfields are the most common 'first' tortoises - maybe through a combination of their hardiness and because they are more widely available and therefore maybe a little bit cheaper.
There are lots of people on here from the South East, maybe one of them has a young tort that could be perfect for you and will get in touch? |

Welcome from me too. Keep researching and asking questions until you're happy to choose the right tort for you. There are lots of people here willing to advise.
