Is this true?
I was told yesterday that old tgi spurs are hard to come across, and that most spurs over the age of 70 are tgg. Is that right ?

For the most part that would be true as Testudo graeca graeca (and to a lesser extant the other newly named subspecies) were the first tortoises to be imported into England between about 1947 until the mid 1960's. The later period of time, 1970's until the mid 1980's were almost all Testudo graeca ibera that were imported.

Loads of both coming into health checks Shaz. I would say 75% of the old ones are one of either of these subspecies. The younger torts tending to be Hermans/Horsfields. A small percentage of Leopards/Sulcata & hardly any Marginated.

I have two spur thighed tortoises and they are definitely over the age of 70, is there any way of telling which subspecies they are?

I will do, maybe you could guess their ages too? They were my mum's childhood pets and fully grown when she got them I think, and she's 56.

I should really introduce my oldies as they are rather special, I also have a circa 100 y/o hermanns that my dad found as a stray nearly 30 years ago! It's lovely that in most of the pics of me as a kid in the garden there is often a random tortoise in the background. They are living in the lounge at the moment and aren't very 'awake', but when they come out I will take some photos
