Default Hatching?

So, I have a family holiday booked to Dorset in August but my eggs will have been incubating for around 58 days by the time we leave. They have been at an average temp of 31. We are only gone for a week and have a friend popping in every day to look after the adults and also check the eggs.

Would anyone advise taking the eggs with us? I am concerned they will hatch and be in the incubator for a while before our friend comes round. How long can a hatchling survive in an incubator?

Help...

Is your friend coming in daily?

Yes, they are coming in everyday to check on the adults and feed them. I really don't won't to have to move them as it's too risky. I just want to make sure they are ok if they hatch and no-one is around. I'll have an enclosure set up ready to put any hatchlings in if they do hatch. I'm just worried that I they hatch it could be several hours before someone turns up.

Default Hatching

Hello Eddie.

If someone is coming in daily, it will not be a problem. I never remove my hatchlings from the incubator until the next day after hatching. I like to make sure that the egg sac opening has completely sealed.

Thank you, that relieves some worry. It is my understanding that they take 24 to 48 hours to hatch, so if they can then stay in the incubator for 24 hours after, they should be fine.

These are my first eggs so I am really hoping they wait for me to return home or hatch before.

Would the hatchlings need anything whilst in the incubator for the first 24 hours? Food? Water?

They should be fine, they may nibble on the egg shell.
I make sure that mine are in a deep container that they cannot climb on each other and escape from, as this happened to some of mine that I didn't realise had hatched! I found 4 but 1 had fallen to the bottom luckliy missing the water container or else it would have drowned!

I agree they will be fine. They don't all get out slowly, some just break out their eggs like the hulk! I tend to leave them in the incubator, sometimes for several days but I do like to get them out for a soak at least once per day.

Thank you all. I'm feeling less stressed. I just need to now set up the enclosure and make the incubator hatchling safe
