I just use topsoil now after trying other substrates. Not sure about the wood chips as I have never used it.
I have pebbles, a log, plants, and growing weeds in too to add interest. I also make different heights in the soil, like little hills and valleys, to break up their eyeline. Marly loves to climb the log and the little hills
