I'm saying slight health issues/husbandry issues are more obvious in tortoise than say cats and dogs.

"Eventually" being part of the problem, for self defense mechanisms "Eventually" would probably be too late.

It would also depend a lot on the conditions...

Captive torts are rather pampered (feeding/drinking/bathing etc), far less self-defense, as they have become used to "predators" (us) picking them...
