Hermanni Boetgerri

Hi folks

I'm really interested to know if there are localities for Boetgerri. Or are these tortoises just the same throughout their range?

And are there different localities for Horsfields?

Thanks for any help.

Well, they are located in several countries. (Greece, Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Croatia, Romania, Hungary). I doubt that the tortoises in all those countries are exactly the same. But no one seems to care. Some people (not all) seem to care about where their THH comes from, but as far as I believe, no one cares where their horsfield, THB or other species came from. Maybe it is because THH are more rare, I don't know.

I know there are at least three different sub species of horsfields.
A friend used to keep and breed them. And she had two different sub species.
One was a much larger and more darker in colour.
But I dont know what they are called sorry:0(

Use the search engine - I can remember Danny discussing the three types of horsfield torts

I remember that. One is quite large in the picture. Wasn't it the Americans were very strict on Horsfields locality in one of the threads. I must admit I didn't know years ago (not that I had a choice as they were rescue ones), but its good to learn these things. I have about 13 eggs each quarter from just a couple girls and I have 8 Horsfield girls, but haven't incubated any at all.

Hey Jonathan,

The closest to a recognised sub species is Testudo Hermanii Peloponnesica an isolated population in Greece. They are very dark in colouration. I have a male that is almost completely black.

If I remember rightly either the Romanian or Bulgarian populations are considerably larger than other THB but not to the extent they'd be considered a sub species.

Danny's guide to the Horsfield sub species is here:

Have you got any links you could share about the THPeloponnesica, I would love to read about it, I assume this population is found in the peloponnese, a part of Greece I know very well, I've travelled all over it. I would like to learn more about this tortoise.

The Bulgarian ones were definitely much larger and paler and a lot were around in the nineties but don't seem to come across them so much these days. I never had one myself but several friends did.

There's not a great deal online regarding the Greek Boettgeri just references to them as a possible sub species. This is my boy who we thought may be one.
