Another new member...Advice also please :)

Hi there,

I'm yet another new member and I'm loving all the help this forum gives you! I've not got a tortoise yet, as I'm still a little undecided on which to get, but think I would like a Hermanns  I'm still doing even more research all the while.

One query I had is whether anyone knows of any breeders of Hermanns (specifically THH, but THB too) more local to me. I'm just outside of Cambridge, but would be happy to travel to get some advice from a breeder, see the torts and hopefully purchase one day!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! :D

Emma :p

Hi and welcome. I am afraid I can't help with advice about breeders or Hermanns because I have horsfields, but someone will be along who CAN help you :)

Hello and welcome :p

Hello Wanda, hello ClareN :)

Thanks for replying, hopefully I'll find some breeders soon. A local pet shop has one little tortoise on his own...but I've been warned its not always wise??

Do you like your Horsfields Wanda? It was between those and Hermanns or Spurs?

Wanda 10-06-2010 12:56 PM

I love them. I think what I like most are their big characters and their grumpy faces.

The only thing I find is that they can be escape artists and as they dig and climb a lot, enclosures have to be secure.

Yes I think they look lovely too, thats the only reason that I don't think I could have a horsfield is the digging and escaping! As sweet as they are.

I have just made (had made) a new enclosure and on the base I used bits of paving stones to make a dig proof surface, put large gravel between to help with drainage and then I put loads and loads of topsoil on top. Hopefully this will stop them digging out and anything else digging in.

Because I have dogs I always have a heavy wire lid on my enclosures both indoor and out, and this obviously stops them going over the top and keeps them safe from the dogs. Now I have done this, they are no problem at all :)

Hi
I live fairly near Cambridge too and I'm looking for a breeder as well. Have you been to the reptile place at Hardwick? Somebody told me they breed their own but I don't know if that's correct? Can I ask where you are?

em7070 10-06-2010 03:18 PM

Wanda, your enclosure sounds brilliant and well thought out, hopefully you'll have no escapes!

Herriotfan, are you actually in Saffron Walden? I know Saffron Walden a bit as I've worked there occasionally. I was thinking of going to the reptile place in Hardwick at the weekend, it's above the Petpaks store, but not run by petpaks themselves I don't think...used to go there a lot when I was younger, but only go to petpaks now for tropical fish food etc.
Have you had any luck with breeders round here? I'm willing to travel...when I know where they are! :D
