horsefield tortoise food

Hello I've had my horsefield tortoise a year now and I'd like to feed him more things. At the moment it's just florette crispy and dandelions but I'd like more variety but every where I look the information contradicts itself. I would like any advice but please things I can buy at the shops only please.

Weeds that are abundant now. Have a look at the Tortoise Table website to id them.

When you say buy at the shops - presumably you mean bagged salad? This can be useful during the colder months, but not ideal as a staple food. If you mean which plants to buy - you can get them at a garden centre, but of course don't know what additives are in the soil or which sprays have been used on them, so they will need to be potted on, washed etc before they can be fed.

I just want things I can buy. Not just salad bags there must be other things like veg fruit or plants. Please there must be someone who can give me helpful suggestions

ooh that's a good web site.

Hoppy S I would go to local independent garden centre and look at pansies too, nasturtiums, thistles (globe ok), antirrhinum, (snap dragon) African violet, campanula, diasca, spider plant. I am trying to think of ones that may be for sale at the moment. To be honest though its far easier to seed wild plants like dandelion , thistle and chicory...I would keep away from veg, there are some greens that are ok in moderation but the are fiddly and most contain too much protein like peas (I adopted a tortoise fed on veg and bean sprouts and she was white and lumpy - now very grubby dirty and healthier).

Tortoise table is good web site for choosing shop bought plants carefully at the low end scale. Problem being you can buy these things but the tortoise may not eat them ! My lot don't touch the pansies and rarely nasturtiums.. they will tug at weeds though but appreciate all torts are not the same ...CB

I agree with all the suggestions.

Hoppysara did say though that it must be stuff to buy in shops.

Some things which are edible and are sold in shops are rocket, squashes (grated up before feeding), pak choi, and watercress. (not cress).

But Hoppysara if you can pick dandelions for your horsfield then you can pick plantain too. This is a really excellent tortoise food and grows in similar places to dandelion. There are the broad leaved and narrow leaved plantains. Maybe you have friend or family with gardens and if they have dandelions then they will have plantain too.
