Plant ID

2 to be ID'd please. The first one is niggling at me as I'm sure I know it. Second one I can only think of something like Antirrhinum, but I'm not certain.

I thought the first one was lambs lettuce (I have sown it in this area before) and it’s been there through the winter and only started growing up and producing buds recently, which made me question it. I googled and discovered it will flower, so I’m hoping that’s what it is as I have been feeding it.
Any other ideas or confirmation it is Lamb’s Lettuce?

Hi Emma could the first be Valarian?

It could be Lynn but I checked it against The Tortoise Table and other websites and the leaves seem more pointed in Valerian whereas these are rounded.

I get all sorts popping up in the garden each year, but this one looked just like lambs lettuce until it started to grow taller and get buds. I might have to wait until flowers emerge and see what colour they are and try to ID it.
Thanks for responding. :-)

Yup - first one is lambs lettuce. Little white flowers have appeared and fit all photos, so that’s good.
Anyone have any ideas on the second?
Very quiet on here...all busy making the most of the sun? :-D

The second one looks like a willowherb to me. There are I think 13 different types of willowherb. There appears to be quite a few types of lamb's lettuce, that one looks like the pictures that I've seen of wild lamb's lettuce

emma_mcraf 23-04-2021 09:41 AM

Thanks Alan. I've never seen willowherb get quite so bushy but there's lots of willowherb growing around it so that makes sense.

The second plant has grown taller and looks to have some flower buds forming. I’m sceptical it’s a willow herb. Any one recognise it? I originally thought it an Antirrhinum, so I’m thinking back along those lines again.

afternoon Emma , lambs is quite furry i thought and strong thick stem but there are so many different types. yes antirrhinum - bunny ears? I have hundreds of them because the seeds drop and grow really easily and can be transferred really easily also. quite long roots sometimes but easy to pick out and replant they then grown woody stems which you can cut back and growth starts again next year - they are lovely. weeds galore this year which is nice and the Chicory is A MAZ ZING !! would feed a feast of thousands or in my case just 10 piggy horsfield girlies !

emma_mcraf 27-05-2021 05:01 PM

Hi Clare. Yes the little clusters of white flowers are typical lambs lettuce and the torts have eaten it quite happily.
So you are familiar with antirrhinum then? I’ve never had it before, but it says it’s a safe feed, so good to know it is easy to let it grow, drop its seeds and more food for my hungry bunch!
The weeds have grown huge this year haven’t they? I’m really pleased with everything in the weed patch, plus have loads of lavatera and mimulus everywhere. And now, finally, the sun is out and we’re in for a dry spell so the torties can enjoy themselves.
Hope all yours are well, Clare. x

thanks Emma, I will have to post my chicory plants - they are ginormous bu tthe horsfields would devour in one minute if i let them ! suns out - C x

I think it's been a really good spring to help the weeds and plants along for the torts, Clare.

I have some wild chichory with 2ft leaves & the centre stems have big crowns on. I think they have loved the rain

tortydat 07-06-2021 01:31 PM

I used to have some chicory before we moved but seem to have lost it where we are now.

You can buy seeds cheaply on ebay Mary. Although I have brought more & sprinkled in new areas these just came up! I think from last year.

I actually tried to grow blue sow thistle for several years. It grows wild in the area near our caravan (welsh/ Shropshire border) I have tried seeds, cuttings, transplanting... Nothing.. Then this year it just seems to have appeared & happy. Huge leaves that the torts love!

Blue sowthistle sounds nice, Lynn. Must keep my eye out.
I often find it can take a whole year until seeds I'd planted out the previous spring decide to pop up.

CherryBrandy 16-06-2021 08:24 PM

apparently seeds need a snap of cold before they kick start , not sure on that. I decided I love chicory its huge !! i have never seen such large leaves which the torts love. And the flowers are so lovely and blue when they come out. I have grown 3 grape vines too as they love the leaves also, CB

emma_mcraf 20-06-2021 06:59 PM

Yes, I always sow my seeds in the autumn so they can get through the winter and usually emerge really well in the spring. I think I need some chicory. My teasel keeps coming back year after year with huge leaves. Have to take scissors out to cut them off or I get well and truly caught by the thorns.
