RIP Boo!!

Help!! My tortoise died today.
She laid eggs September on 2012 and since then had not been herself!
She didn't seem to eat or drink, we bathed her lots and kept a close eye on her, when we bathed her she would occasionally have poos so we took it she must have been having something to eat. However about a couple of weeks ago she stopped opening her eyes unless we would touch them ect.
Just wondering if anyone could help explain why my Boo died. Very sad and will miss her lots.
Thank you to anyone that could shed some light on this. Xx

Hard to tell for sure without examining the tortoise, but it sounds like she may have retained an egg or 2 and that set up an infection that eventually took her life. :(
Sorry to hear you lost her :(
Did you incubate the eggs? Was she the only tortoise you had?

We have three horsefield tortoises.
We did incubate them yes however none hatched.
Thank you, I planning on getting another however very scared in case the same thing happens again. Just want to se if anyone could shed some light on the situational advise on what to do next time, or if any of the others decide to lay eggs.
We did a lot of research on what to do and ways to help her try and recover however a lot of what we found contradicted other people's advise it was very hard knowing what was right ow wrong.
Thanks again. Any advise you have, I am very greatful for xxx

How many males and how many females? How big are they? Having a retained egg and a subsequent infection isn't contagious, so shouldn't have to worry about a new tortoise catching anything. Did she dig a proper nest and lay all the eggs in a hole or did she lay them 1 or 2 at a time over a few days?

She payed the eggs days between each other.
Okay thank you so the others are safe.
In all honest we don't know the sex of the other two. We have only had two of them no more than two years and were told its hard to tell the sex of them until they are older.
Only realising Boo was female by the fact she lay eggs.
Boo is bigger than the other two, being about the size of two hands cupped together the other two are the size of a single hand one maybe slightly bigger. Xx

If you post pictures http://www.shelledwarriors.co.uk/for...ad.php?t=29355 here http://www.shelledwarriors.co.uk/for...splay.php?f=32 of their bottom shells, we can give a go at sexing them for you. :D

Without being funny didn't you take the tort to the vets if you thought something was wrong!

Saves me saying it. But what's done is done, can't change it now. Best thing is to help with the rest of them. Can you tell us more about how you keep your torts. Heating, lighting, housing, food etc.

Next time use a vet! You can also save yourself a lot of money in vet bills if illnesses etc are caught early enough, however like its been said nothing can be done about the dead tort but I'd keep a close eye on the others if they have been in with it. Its just guess work from even the most expert of keepers without actually seeing the tort as to what was/is wrong and to be honest forums can't and shouldn't take the place of a vet. Did you ask on any forum back in September when you first thought something amiss? I'm sorry but thats a long time to leave an animal which you had already recognised something wasn't right. Please don't leave the others as long if something goes wrong with one of them, if money is the issue then try putting a little away for emergency vet trips.
