Prolapse

Hi there, I have a 6 year old Ibera with a nasty prolapse, I have a vets appointment in the morning. I've got her inside, nice and warm, am bathing her in sugar water and have her on clean paper. Is there anything else I can do to make her comfortable overnight? Many thanks Maddy

You are doing the right thing:0if you can cover the prolapse with something then all the better, to help Stop infection.

You need to keep the prolapse from drying out, this will keep the tissue alive. Keep her in a plastic container with no substrate and generously apply vasoline to the prolapse.

Thanks for your responses sandy and dan. It now appears to be bleeding, it looks like the prolapse has split. There was a fly on her and it appears to have laid eggs!!! I've removed them with a cotton bud, she's in such a mess, should I prepare myself for the worst tomorrow?

Hi,

I really don't know what to suggest but have googled for you and found this link.

http://www.tortoisetrust.org/articles/prolapse.htm

Not sure if it is of help, out dated or not as I am no expert......

I'm sur someone will be along with further info and far far far more experience.

Hang on in there Maddy, I know it's hard not to worry.

It all depends on what's prolapsed, but it's not good to be splitting nor the fly eggs. The only thing you can do is keep it from drying out and keep the flies away until tomorrow.

Hi all, it was the worst possible outcome I'm afraid. The vet operated for over 2 hours, the colon had prolapsed but there was internal damage to the uretha, bladder and ovary ducts. He had no choice but to put her to sleep. I'm devastated at the loss and also worried that it may happen again with my others. I have truly never seen anything so horrible. Poor Ruby :(
