Vit D3

We haven’t had a debate on here for soooooo long , so here’s a question that has been asked before and never really answered properly. Here goes, when giving a pinch of neutrobal or other vit d3, how much should we give per tortoise, what is a pinch ? How do we know if they’re getting enough or too much? Your thoughts please.

Or maybe I’m the only one here who hasn’t got a clue and you know what you’re doing :-D

I use Nutrobal at the weekends and limestone flour for the rest of the week. I literally use a pinch and that is quite literally a pinch between thumb and finger and lightly sprinkle to coat the food. I go between tables until the pinch runs out then take another pinch to do the rest. I know some say they blow it over but I’d make right mess of that, so I just don’t go heavy-handed. Not very precise or scientific, I know.
How about you, Suze?

That’s really interesting, I much more liberal with it, I feel I have to make sure they’ve all had plenty, but in reality I don t have a clue what’s enough, that’s why I’m asking what other people do. I will be interested to know what other people do. Thanks Emma.

oooh yes a good old SW debate in the theme of Royal Family baby. When one has a baby hatchling one does feed calcium nutrobol sparingly , scattered by small silver spoon, otherwise one believes once baby is bigger they absorb proper nutrients from the goodness of the earth and sunshine. Thus the family shell tree for over 20 years has not used any form of D3 on adoptees, with a nod towards monitoring. CB

I only use vitamin supplements for my hatchlings and juveniles but use limestone flour for the adults as well as the in between days for the babies. Leave cuttlefish and chalk down all the time but very few take any notice of it especially the chalk.

Mine are the same with chalk, Mary. The females all love their cuttlefish and most of the males will go through stages of eating it, especially when it’s freshly washed, all except Theo.
But they treat the chalk like it’s another rock in their enclosure.

Hhmmmm all very interesting, im concluding from this so far, that I could ease off with the nutrobal, they all have limestone flower everyday. But this is the place were I was told to use nutrobal once or twice a week. Gordon are you out there somewhere , what do you do?

I don't use nutrobol anymore it stinks and I found babies wouldn't eat food with it on. This smells nice and never seen anyone turn up their noses at it.
I now use this but only for any babies and tortoises that don't go outside.
All my adult tortoises outside never get it.
It comes with a little scoop so you can just tap a bit over food and I only do it two or three times a week.
