THH - Locales

Extract from Chris Leon of Hermanni Heaven from Facebook

Various (not all) distinct locales of the Western Hermann's tortoise (T. h. hermanni) here. IUCN Red Listed as Endangered, this tortoise is rapidly losing its habitat and genetic diversity in particular strains. This photo did not work out as well as I had hoped since they would not stop moving, but some key differences between the locales can be noted in it. These animals are actually separated genetically to their locales/strains despite the similar appearance they share.

Some locales are much different than others for example, Sardinian animals are known as "giants" while Sicilian tortoises feature thigh spurs like Testudo graeca and are often referred to as "Sicilian Spurred".

Read more about these locales and our work with them on my site HermanniHaven.com if you'd like.

Anyone waiting on Studbook updates, please be patient, we're on it.

Happy Fri-dizzle.

There is a photo of the locales but I ain't clever enough to post it herehttps://www.facebook.com/chris.leone.944/posts/10210356033841287

Do you mean liquorice allsorts ? Never a bully Gordon ! your posts are amongst the most interesting, humours and informative.

Thanks for this one 4chester, grantchester. Love reading about the more in depth analysis and technical side of tortoise husbandry. They definitely need preserving. your photographs on the site are fantastic too. CB

Amazing photos of such beautiful tortoises. I agree that we must preserve them and try to avoid cross-breeding where possible. It's awful to read they are in danger of becoming endangered. I've read Chris Leon's website a number of times and he argues their case so well.
There's much to be said for knowing what locale THH originate from.

It's not bullying behaviour to be a 'purist'. Again, people can take things out of context. Gordon's passion for torts comes from the heart and the head. The same goes for many others on here. It's what makes it such an informative forum.
