Known UK Breeders

Every year thousands upon thousands of tortoises are imported into the UK from all over the world. Despite having legitimate looking papers, most of these sadly are taken from the wild. Once caught, they are packed on top of one another in crates and subjected to weeks of starvation whilst in transit to British shores. These extremely poor conditions leave the tortoises either dead, or very often near to death. Those that survive are usually carrying parasites in their digestive tracts, often leading to death in the hands of an inexperienced keeper, or at best, an expensive vets bill. Wild caught tortoises are often very cheap to buy, but in the long run they are costly in both the financial and ecological term. Many species of tortoise are already on the endangered species list, with others rapidly approaching this state. Buying a UK captive bred tortoise is the first step in stopping the trade in wild caught tortoises, since if the demand stops - eventually so will the supply.

Sue Boyle

Testudo hermanni boettgeri

All tortoises are home bred and reared on natural fresh diet - sometimes I have Jersey Sanctuary hatchlings too. All come with correct DEFRA certs, care pack including weight charts, breeders ID history, care sheets etc. They are delivered by hand where possible, never by courier other than Transtort. All homes must be approved and where possible they must have outdoor access in summer. No tortoises are sold to people providing vivarium or year long indoor accommodation.

Arlene

Hampshire

Testudo hermanni

While indoors they are kept in a tortoise table under Powersun lights, and fed on a weeds only diet, supplemented since day one with Nutrobal and calcium. They spend as much time as possible living outdoors to benefit from natural sunlight. Growth is slow and smooth and they are very healthy. I give as much advice as I can, and provide full care sheets and aftercare support.
