Horace now is at 23c and is in the front room where I have the TV and this computer. Once I go to bed, the room lights out, the temp through the night is around 17c.
If I kept his lights on until 7.pm that would waste money and more important make him uncomfortable?

Hello everyone!

So glad to see this thread as we just got our first family tortoise which is a Hermanns. We think it is a she as it is able two years old. I am just wondering whether when should her lights be turned off....... there is a basking light at one end (60watts bulb), UVB light along the table, and the thermometer in the middle or the table reads 26 degrees celcius, which is the room temperature in the house. At the moment little tot has gone into it's house, which has straw bedding, and went to sleep. Should I keep the lights on or switch them off? If I switch the lights off will little tot gets too cold in the night?

Sorry for the somewhat naive questions! I want to do the best for our new family member which is yet to be named!

Marley is 14 months, once he beds down under his slate I turn off the UVB.
In the past I've left it on but he never resurfaces.

Im still getting used to my torts being outdoors full time & experimenting with their light/heat at the moment. But when they were indoors I always just left their lights on for a minimum of 12 hours (usually longer) I thought they had to be on for that length of time to stop torts going into hibernatin mode. I thought they were aware of the light being on even if theyre in their hide.

Jackie that picture is fabulous!! you should put it in the pictures section, let everyone see it - & what a bargain Ernie was - you must tell us his story?
