DNA sexing
I have Seen lots of photos on here asking for guidance on the sex of particular tortoise.
I have been to cage bird sale days where it is the norm to offer DNA tests of birds which are often unable to be visually sexed. The cost of blood or feather DNA I believe is around £13 or £14. Is this service offered for tortoise? If it is, is the cost around the same and why do more people not use DNA sexing. Apologies if this is a regular question. Thank you |

Interesting im following this you would think there is a test right let's see what the more experience say, I'm thinking if there is a test it's going to be a lot more than the birds DNA test.☺

That is interesting, I suppose incubating influences the sex so that would be a guide, also when grown I think you could definitely establish. I know you may want to know at a younger stage which is difficult but are there birds that even when fully grown you can't tell? AND....is it like Jurassic park dinosaur raptor they can hatch eggs fertile without the other. random question I know.....CB

When we had children we never asked to know if they were boys or girls unfortunately my son was called Sophie for the first six weeks
My own tortoise were incubated to be female so here is hoping, my question is more out of curiosity really but does lead me to another one. A male dog is a dog and a bitch a bitch a bird can be cock or hen etc. What is the correct term for male and female tortoise? |

It won't work until the tortoise is mature and by that time they are easily sexable

Unlike mammals, reptiles don't produce male or female hormones until they are adult. So nothing to find until they are producing those hormones.
