Thanks all, appreciate it!
I want to look after him as well as I can and be able to pass on the knowledge to my dad when he gets him. Have got him a book on keeping tortoises also. I'd love tortoises myself, but the boyfriend is a bit resistant at the minute, so hoping Chester will win him round.

Hi and welcome to SW, it's great to see another member here from the emerald isle
I keep horsfield torts, at moment they have been out since May in secure enclosures. When inside they are kept on a mix of 70% topsoil and 30% playsand. I just feed garden weeds. They are great little torts to keep

Hi Beverley - Do you keep them outside day and night? Is that with or without a heat option when they're outside? How many Horsefields do you have? Out of curiosity, why do you mix the soil/sand?

We have a brand new chicken run (but no chickens yet), so we built it for him last night, and he'll go outside for a few hours today to see how he does.

Hi, after tomorrow I will have nineteen torts, 3 of these are horsfield they are out day and night, I would only bring them in if the temp falls below 12C which is not a problem at the moment or if we had a couple of very wet days where they didn't get up, I would bring them in to heat up. It's a bit colder at the moment and they are eating less so may bring them in, for a heat up.
I mix the sand and soil so it's a lighter consistency and have some stones over it, really it's to try and replicate what they have in the wild. I forgot to say they are outside at night in little hutches that I can lock, just in case of predators such as foxes.

Thats great information, I think it's something we will work towards with him... he's never really been outside before, and I don't want to make him ill by just putting him outside 24/7 even if the temperature is ok... we'll do a few hours at a time and gradually build up...
