Redfoot and Pyrimading
Hi Folks,
I've heard even on the diets we all believe to be the correct ones it is more than likely our redfoots will experience some pyrimading as they grow. We have 3 redfoots here, 2 were born November 07 and the other the end of March 08. I was just wondering if anyone has had experience of very little or no pyrimading? And if so can you please post what you have fed them, how big or small their enclosures were and how much they were outside and would love to see some photos. Really appreciate any replies. Thanks, Michael |

Hi there,
Pyramiding in tortoises is some what a debatable topic when it comes to the factors, here are some points that are ussually brought up; Too much protein, wrong source of Too little calcium Too much phosphorus (a poor calcium: phosphorus ratio) Lack of excerise Hydration status Grain based diets ( in most cat / dog biscuits) Lack of fibre Too much food, even of the right sought I have two, one a recently aquired hatchling and my other Humphrey is probably about 7-8 yrs nd i've owned her for over 5yrs she was 85.5g when I got her and now 2,200g. Her weight gain at the mo is not as much as I'd like. Heres a pic of her pyramiding, mainly affected at the front, but can be seen all over - She's currently undergoing treatment for dry shell rot so shes not looking great in these pics. This was taken last summer Hope this helps you |

Hi Michael
Regarding the dry shell rot - in Humphreys case there is nothing, no new growth between the scutes, the rot has prevented that. She is now slowly showing signs of new growth as dark shell is forming in areas. Its difficult to see in the photos, on one scute in particular you can fit part of your fingernail underneath it where it has lifted up slightly. The white marks yours have are more than likely new growth and should eventually darken |
