Hello.
What size is the male Hermanns? Its size rather than age that dictates sexual maturity. Having said that I have had females lay the last couple of years in the absence of a mature male so it does happen. Its always worth incubating the eggs if you so wish. Do you have an incubator? If not, theres a good guide to making your own on this link: http://www.thetortoisehouse.com/Incubators04.htm Last edited by Kirkie; 29-04-2011 at 09:51 AM. |

They're worth incubating as you never really know he could be hitting the right spot

incubate yes but assuming that both adults have their proper papers and are microchipped if not you'll have hatchling that you will only be able to give away. It will cost you around £20-30 to have each adult chipped if they aren't and not sure about the cost of the cert I think its another £25 then there's the hatchlings papers again another £25?. While it may be nice to incubate and hatch unless you have thought it through you can end up with more torts that you either keep yourself with the possibility of having to keep them separate depending on the sex, give them away only for the new owner to have to try get papers for them or the costs involved before you can sell them. If you are serious about breeding in the future the costs would be worth it but for a one off experiment I'm not so sure. However if your torts are both chipped and papered then it will be easy to get papers for any hatchlings with just the £25 one of payment (unless it has gone up). PS that doesn't include the cost of an incubater and a pulse thermostat will cost you around £50 which you will need if you make your own
