Please don't misread me... I really appreciated the effort and the post. It forced me to crosscheck.

I found that there is an equivelent of the Reptile manual that was republished in 1994... that was a reprint of an edition that was originally printed in 1992. That's the one I got the quote out of. They came out with a new edition in 1994 by two different vets. I haven't found that it has been reprinted since. So... I'm hunting down that one and the one you quoted to see how they compare.

Just curious... did you type that or did you get it from another post?

I'll try and hunt down some stuff. One of the best references on nutrition is the one off the BCGs website... it is written by a vet and there are no TT references.

I hope the readers of this do not think I'm anti TT... I'm not. I do object to the idea that it is extremely biased... that's my only gripe.

That would be the specific protein content for that specific sample.

You can't trust the internet but it is a good starting point to give you an idea where to crosscheck. This is why I usually scroll down to the references... I do as much with books also.

I'm I misunderstanding in that if the tortoise consumes 200 grams of material it is getting twice the amount of protein?

Calculate the protein content of the remainder (lets say 10 grams, 20% of the remaining 50 grams of dry matter). Factor back in the 50 grams of water lost from the 100 gram starting point and your 10 grams of protein becomes a percentage of 100 grams again, 10% of the original wet matter.

Dandelion greens 2.7% protein content I've just worked out from data on one nutrition website! You cannot trust the internet.

Hi Ed. First edition of Manual of exotic pets came in 1991. Manual of Reptiles still exists too, current edition from 2004, but I haven't got access to that at the moment:

Yes, I typed that (Sad, I know).

Very abmirable... thank you for the trouble... or... curse you for sending me on a book quest I really can't afford right now.

There are some dealer here in the states that probably carry it I'll try to find it here. Thanks again.

I did note that the quote I used was from a 1994 reprint of the first edition.

I've yet to see you contribute anything useful to any of these conversations.

Really wont go into more silly discussions which scares the newcommers away.
You got 6 replies so far in this thread .. and really nothing usefull either.

And you not being able to buy a book ? Is that usefull..?
I find it useful. Any knowledge, be it speculative or fact is useful.

Why would it scare newcomers away? You are the only one causing grief. This is an interesting discussion. Leave us alone and let us debate this in peace, every oppinion is as valuable as the next, there is no need to turn it into a slanging match. I want to learn from knowledgable people and I'm sure others do too. If you have anything useful to say then please do.

I doubt you can say that there is a specific amount of protein in a specific plant (well actually you could but it wouldn't necessarily be correct).

For example, peas. Protein per 100g.. Tesco 6.0g, Heritage 6.0g, Birdseye 4.9g, Birdseye Petit Pois 5.4g.

How much of a difference might there be from plant to plant and at different times of the year? Has anyone actually tested weeds for protein content on a daily or weekly basis for the whole of it's life?
