Woodchips are normally considered bad, alot use hemp auboise and/or soil and play-sand mixed substrate.
Hemp you can get from some farms...or the shelledwarriors shop sells it i think |

Your tort does sound quite poorly. How long was he kept in the viv for before you changed him to the table? If he is as limp as you say he is You need to act quite quickly. Have you bathed your tort for about 20 minutes in nice warm water (no hotter than a babies bath and not too deep, just covering the plastron) this will help to rehydrate, warm him and should stimulate defaecation. You will probably need to change the water half way through as it cools quite quickly. I normally find with the torts that I'm looking after, once they've have had a nice warm bath, had a poo, their appetite is huge. So if the bath perks him up, try feeding. Hopefully someone with more experience will come along shortly with more suggestions. Good luck. Sam x x

He could also be a bit grumpy from having his environment changed frequently, it does take a little while for them to settle. Don't forget they do also like to go to bed early, the ones I look after normally tuck themselves away at around 6pm, I have all their lights on timers so at 6pm all lighting goes of until the morning. Once they are in bed I try not to disturb them. Take care honey.

Sherman has never been much of an eater and spends most of his time asleep. If i put him outside on the grass he can move pretty quickly though.
I have found that leaving him for a GOOD 20mins to half an hour means that he eats quite well after. I have a small plastic container with deep sides that is not see through as a bath. i put it in his enclosure (away from the bulb so i dont steam cook him) and leave him to it whilst i do other things, checking him occasionally. I started this 3 days ago and i dont change the water half way through - but he has eaten well after - even with his vits on the weeds! paula

The woodchip you keep your tort on is toxic.Once damp it can harbor mold spores and cause respiratory problems.I would take this out immediately and use an old towel until you can get some John Innes seed compost mixed with childrens play sand. When your tort had its head under the water, was its neck moving in swallowing motions? My torts put their heads under the water occasionally to drink. You need a UVBD3 combined heat lamp, placed at one end of the table only. If your tort keeps going limp, you need to get it to a tortoise vet as a matter of urgency. In the mean time, increase your torts bath to possibly two to three times daily, luke warm water, deep enough to cover the bottom of his shell. |
