i would say it is unusual for a tort to still be shy after a year but i dont know whether stars are notorious for it
is it possible that it could have had bad experience with ppl in the past or could it possibly be wild caught ie bought from a pet shop usually means wild caught.

Not to sure on Stars, but i know a couple of people who have them, and my impression of these wonderful little tortoises is that they are shy by thier very nature!!!

I keep North Africans and every one has had a spoilt life all enjoy being hand fed, and some expect a little tickle under the chin, i must say it is very nice they come up to you in the garden mainly for food but sometimes just for company !!

Hi Stormin,

Firstly I would like to say welcome to this forum, we are a helpful friendly bunch.

Secondly, have you tried picking your tortoise up and holding him / her by the edges of the carapce eah side which normally a tortoise will hold its head and legs out, and then try reassuring him / her by gently rubbing the head and chin, to ry and get the tortiise used to you petting it and handling it.

You need to build trust and confidence between the tortoise and yourself, they can be stubborn but perseverence is the key, keep trying and eventually you will win him / her round.

Hope this helps a little.

Ade

Hi Stormin
I keep Indian stars 5 in all 2 males 3 females , mine are wild caught originally and came to me through customs .
At first they were very nervous always hiding they shot in there shell soon a s they heard or saw me.
Now they are extremely friendly eat well and probably the most active of my tropical types always basking and searching for food.
I'm sure in time yours will become less aloof and start being a more sociable tortoise.
Diet wise should consist of grasses, chopped hay, weedy greens(dandelion.sow thistle, clover) and occasional pumpkin or squash .
I feed daily leaving food for up to an our anything that is left is removed .
They love to be free outdoors grazing grass if the weather is warm and sunny, it can take them time to adjust to the big outdoor world though.
Indian stars are one of my favourite tortoises I could watch them all day
