Bread
Hi
I have soaked some medicine in a piece of bread so I can give to the sick tortoises easily. But I was wondering if the bread would do them harm? Thanks. |

Accuracy of dosing for one, if you are soaking reasonably large amounts it can be difficult to ensure you are getting the right dose in. As for what reason, simply that if you are treating a gastrointestinal condition, overloading with carbohydrate might not be the best thing to do. I find that for most oral meds, Mediterranean torts can usually be dosed directly both for accuracy of the dose and ensuring they get it all. Goodluck

Hi
Thanks but I know I am giving the right dosage of medication, it's just that I was wondering whether the bread (which soaks in the medicine and given to tortoises) could be harmful to them. I am not treating for gastrointestinal conditions, so I guess the carbohydrates won't do them harm (??). I tried giving them the medicine through a syringe in liquid form but they just spit it out, when I soak it in bread, it becomes creamy and they don't spit it out. They swallow it all and I feel good that I know they are taking all their medication. Thanks again for your help. |

If its not too much bread you should be fine as long as the creaminess you are describing is not some sort of interraction of the bread with the medication you are giving. if it is an interraction the medication may be being altered to a different chemical making it ineffective (some things you can mix and some you cant) thats about all i can say. hope this helps.
