Timothy's book - Page 2

This book realtes to the work of Gilbert White the great English naturalist. Its worth visiting his house in Selborne if you are down that way. Timothy lived in the garden happily for many years and make a sucessful adaptation to English conditions (although he didn't become an invasive species!). There are other books about Gilbert White which cover Timothy to a greater or lesser degree. His factual story is a heart warming one.

The house in Selborne accommodates the Oates collection of papers and belongings which is mostly about the explorer Ernest Shackelton. Captain Oates is remembered now only for the words "I am going outside and may be some time". Sobering stuff indeed. Oates and Shackleton were both people of great personal courage and resolve.

A visit to Selborne is like a step back in time. The garden is lovely and its easy to imagine Timothy lazing about in the flower borders.

Hi corra. I've just been reminded by my better half that Gilbert white himself wrote a book about Timothy. Portrait of a tortoise. A slim volume but enchanting. Includes weight of Timothy at different times of year. Just like we keep our records.

I'm reading Timothy's Book at the moment! Its a really nice read! I'm gonna have to find some of these other books mentioned now though! And love to visit the house in Selborne.

I've just picked these up on eBay for under £4 for both books. Will make good reading on my breaks from building Benedict his new outdoor enclosure.

Benedict is a common name for Popes, papal means pope like, I think..
