All cacti sites advise planting in a compost like John Innes No.3 mixed with sharp sand or fine gravel 50% of each. Sarah

Ooh lucky you Sarah. I always plant them in a sand soil mix, but the trick is not to water them for two weeks, the roots then start to take. Then I water mine about once a week in the summer and every two to three weeks in the winter months. You are going to have some very happy torts!!!

Lucky you Sarah. Have they arrived yet? I only ask because I won exactly the same thing week before you, same seller/photo & no sign of them yet! I paid over £20 too - so you got a great bargain, I was going to bid on yours but was away on holiday.

You need to let the cut ends dry off a little - approx two weeks then plant in any soil but drier the better I use vermiculite, gravel & potting compost. DONT WATER at this point. Put somewhere warm & water with a spray bottle very lightly around the base of plant after 2 weeks or so.

ps try to use tongs - I potted some pads up this weekend & wore really thick gloves & still got loads in my hands, theyre a pig to get out & really hurt. If you slip up use tweezers, then put plasters on to get what was left out.

Hi Sarah I grow quite a few of these now, you need to let the ends dry out completely before potting up or all goes wrong, do exactly as burno says and you cant go wrong If you want any advice, just ask, I potted up about 25 unrooted optunia about 6 weeks ago and all took and all are sprouting new shoots. I use john inns no3.

Also don't over water, they can go a long time without water and you can normally tell when they are thirsty
