i think it is good that they are clueing there staff up but I don't agree on pets at home selling torts because it's just someone else having them imported over, I really like pets at home and really hope they don't start importing.

I'm pretty sure the tortoises they sell will be imported, I can't see where else they would get them from. The only store near me doesn't stock them so I can't even go and ask a few questions
There are still a lot of unanswered questions about the importation of tortoises. Personally, if tortoises are being farmed rather than taken from the wild I think this is a positive thing, if the conditions are acceptable whilst remembering this is a farming operation. Its the sheer volume of imports opposed to the size of the "farms" (from information I've read on them), the maths just doesn't add up. GTM posted earlier today on anothr thread about the "ranching" technique employed for Horsfields tortoises. Females are collected, eggs laid, the adults are then released. Are these "wild" eggs, or farmed? Moot point as Horsfields are not CITES protected. Until these operations and importers of tortoises open up a bit there is always going to be a cloud of suspicion hanging over their business. The burden of proof lies with them. Perhaps down the line the picture might become a bit clearer...come back to this in a few months hopefully. |

I know for a fact that Kirkie is a member of this group (I've seen her torts on the website) but if you care about tortoises that are farmed in the former USSR and want to help stop it then The Tortoise Protection Group have a petition to stop the importation of tortoises for the pet trade.
www.tortoise-protection-group.org.uk just follow the petition lik on the hompage.

I absolutely agree with Shelbyville 66%. I am a proud member of the Tortoise Protection Group, I have signed their petition which is campaigning for a ban on the importation of tortoises for the pet trade (so please read it carefully, this is a full ban, be careful what you wish for).
In my view, there are plenty of tortoises around, a quick browse through the Free ad's online will show that, and as there are now such a large number of tortoises in the country, we may reach that nirvana like state of being "self sufficient" when it comes to breeding tortoises in the future. That's why I support the TPG and signed their petition. The 33% I don't agree with is being called "her". I have the equipment to prove otherwise |

I guessed that but i shouldn't assume everyone is a girl just because I am! It's nice to meet another member of the TPG on here though.

Nice to meet you too
I'm probably repeating myself but they are a lovely bunch at the TPG. They've helped me out a lot. |

They're great! I got both my torts from Helen, the TPG administrator. I can ask her anyhing and she never seems tired of my neurotic tortoise questions.

My local P@H branch is the Stockport one which is selling Hermans, and they did readily admit they are farmed torts from slovenia
