Wildflower mix & clover

This is probably a very silly question with the wash out we've had recently but if I sow one of those garden centre wildflower mixes would they come up this year or am I too late? Same with clover seeds....I figure they would die off for winter anyway. CB

I sow all my weed seeds in the Autumn, as some seeds need a really cold spell to help them germinate. Some weeds come up slowly over the Winter (depending on what sort of Winter weather we have) but by the Spring I have loads of weeds and flowers for my torts:0)

I do the same as Sandy and usually the weeds are pretty lush come the spring.

Thank-you Sandy and Emma - so wait for a few weeks and then sow. I have dug a few patches over so it is ready and I suppose I don't cover over either with a cloche just keep an eye on them. CB

Well once the torts are no longer using the outdoor enclosures I cover them with plastic sheeting to prevent all the debris from the trees falling into them. I find it has a greenhouse effect come the spring and the weeds thrive under there. I literally just randomly sow them all over the enclosures and in my weed border too and let nature take its course.

brilliant thank-you both, I usually spread the dandelion clocks and dig in the dandelion roots but I sowed clover seeds at the beginning of the season and I am sure the birds ate them all. I will give both methods a go as I have loads of leaves dropping too and it makes a mash in one area and the willow tree (leafs) is a nightmare - none of the torts like going near it , but I like the natural just sow practice.
I have tried Nasturtium flowers for the first time and their seeds are dropping all over the place so I am really hoping they are self seeding....CB

Yes to the nasturtium. They will soon be sprouting!!

I am sure you already know but alot of the wildlower mixes contain plants not suitable for tortoises

Vikki no I didn't, so thanks. luckily for me I did check the contents and would say the majority I thought were ok. It was an impromptu buy months ago but will cross reference some of them im not sure on - Can't see they will all come up and usually the grass is full of weed and clover but thought I would try it. CB
