Aloe Vera plant cuttings

Does any one know best way to do cuttings from aloe vera plants? mine are very small at the moment with hardly any root (wonder if that's usual?) and between 4 - 5 pokey up bits. And best soil. I have them temporarily in coco coir -but wonder if shingly/grit and soil is better? ....many thanks CB

Mine produce new little 'baby' shoots a lot. I tend to pop these in a little container of water until they produce roots and then pot them on. They grow quite quickly. I just use top soil for them so they can go straight into the tortoise tables once they're big enough. My ladies are serious aloe chompers and a new plant doesn't last for long, so I've always got loads on the windowsill to replace them. I also find that if they haven't taken the plant completely down but there are stumps of the plant left, if I pop it on the windowsill it regenerates.

thanks Emma that make sense. Are the baby shoots obvious as in another one of the pokey up things? coming up in the middle? I have just taken a look and mine don't have any baby ones they are all same height. maybe mine are too young at the moment.

I can do dandelions. Did you know you can rip the leaves off and feed them and just dig the root into the ground with no leaf and hey presto ! I was amazed years ago. Love dandelions. I will wait for my Aloe to flourish like yours if I can, sounds fabulous, they are so nice to look at - sort of cheery.

Yes the baby shoots tend to appear in another place in the pot beside the main plant.
As for dandelions, that works for cat's ear and sowthistle too. Probably many more weeds as well. It's always worth trying.

Once they mature a bit they send up tiny plants near the base of main plant. Which I just tease out & plant straight into soil & I have now got lots of them. I don't think they are fussy what you plant them in, I have used ordinary soil, coir & cactus soil..

I get pups quite often. Once they have at least 3 leaves try and dig down as far near the root as you can and either pull off or use a sharp knife. I used to buy expensive succulent soil but have found good old top soil and builders sand works great x

thank-you shelmarie - I have 3 plants and none of mine have had anything remotely like babies. I have had them a month now and they all have about 5 pokey up bits but nothing coming up. I might have to check they are aloe vera at this rate !! CB
