The instructions should be on the box somewhere, all bulbs are not the same but I do remember 8 ins minimum being mentioned once before though it will depend what bulb it is

It all depends on the lamp and the setup of the lamp.

What lamp do you have? Is it reflected properly? How far is it now from the top of the shell? How old is the lamp? What controller are you using?

Happy to help if you can answer these things

John,

John,
the lamp is 2 months old ..its 24" long uv strip 10.0
its on a 12 hour timer 6 am - 6pm
theres a 4 and a half inch gap between the top of shell to the lower start of the strip .the strip is along the back wall of the table
It can be moved up 1 and a 1/2 inches to the top of the tortoise table... but if it needs to be moved higher , don't know how in going to manage that as there is nothing to hang it too
many thanks

It is rather close even for T8. Not that index is likely to be high but the glare risk could be an issue.

Arcadia branded lamps in T8 are set to be "basking" at 12" from lamp to animal with the reflector.

This ensures a usable index to the animal and reduces the risk of PKC from glare.

Oh no you really lost me
this isn't a basking lamp ..its just a uv strip that is giving daylight
He has a separate basking lamp..

I think John's advice still applies though. Ideally when your tortoise is lying under the heat source basking he would also be under the tube.

Yeah im sure johns advise is correct , im just confused
so it still applies even if the strip isn't above the tort ...its along the back wall of the tort table ?

Posting a picture of your enclosure would help us visualize everything.
