How will it work?
The Government's plan to have the unemployed picking up litter and doing gardens has me a bit puzzled. I can only speak for around here but at the moment our council employs people to pick up litter so will they be paid off to save the council some cash and then they will be back doing the same job because they are unemployed?
As for gardeners, there are more self employed gardeners round here than there are gardens almost so, will people get their gardens done for free by the unemployed.. people who are now ex gardeners because the government nicked all their work? There was over 100 pay-offs at a factory here not long ago so the big question is, will there be enough spades to go round? Loose Mouth Cameron and the boys talk a good game |

Your street must be cleaner than ours, we do have council cleaners, but there are lots of areas that don't get touched, and also lots of areas that could do with some attention to overgrown bushes etc.
There must be lots of projects that there isn't any money for, that aren't going to get done by councils or any one else as there simply isn't the money, but we have a few million labourers sat around that are already getting paid, so why not put them to some good use, they're only having to do 4 weeks. |

I agree ... how can they find those on benefits jobs when there are so many unemployed chasing so few jobs. There are just not enough jobs

Same goes for charities doing dog wardens out of jobs, clothing shops out of sales etc.
We should stop the RSPCA, Heart foundation, Scope etc, they all have shops around here selling second hand books clothes etc, Think of all the poor businesses they are taking sales away from, they should be banned. |

aye they should be banned, they are rent free and putting businesses out of business. a book shop in berwick went down the pan after a charity book shop opened next door to it, there was no way he could compete with someone that was rent free while was having to pay rent. more than 50% of shops there now are charity shops

having just returned home from my second season working on a camp/wigwam site in thornhill, scotland,i can only say that we really need these crims working down here.we live about a bottle of pop and a mars bars walk from our local shop, guess where all the rubbish goes?yes on our garden.we have street cleaners but have never seen one around here,i think they give the town the once over then find somewhere to hide for the rest of the day.where we stay up north people seem to have more pride, the council chappie used to come round the village 2/3 times every week so theres very little rubbish around.but if folks didn't chuck all this crap on the floor the council wouldn't have to employ an army of loafers.(sorry that should read cleaners)
have a nice day dave |

Dealing with the long term unemployed is all well and good but considering the number of jobs available is pitiful they just don't have a chance. Such people often don't have qualifications that employers require and employers won't employ them anyway because they've been unemployed for so long. They're always the one to be at the back of the queue, even during the boom years.
I can't see this working. I can see people having their benefits stopped for dubious reasons, resulting in people losing their homes and effectively starving, given that a 3 month penalty is being talked about. I would understand if there were jobs aplenty but there just isn't. Even places like Primark want 2 years of retail experience for one of their basic retail jobs. Employers are asking more and more experience for less and less money. Helen xx |
