Try aquatic-online for bulbs. The hobby ones are a lot cheaper and just as good. Mine have run for over 6 months with no probs yet. Include this link when you send the tort pellets back http://www.tortoisetrust.org/articles/webdiet.html should be enough to persuade them to refund your money

Hi Andy, no the Trex lamp will not fit in that lamp you posted. It is far too hot, you need a special ceramic bulb holder and heat resistant wire connecting it. It then needs to be suspended above your table. This can then be left on for 12-14 hours, it gives heat and uv then turn it off and you dont need any light/heat on over night. Just keep checking your thermomters to monitor the heat day and night.

Hi Andy that is the right neutrobal, you could also look in Shelled Warrior shop incase its any cheaper.
I've just took a couple of pic of my trex lamp, its suspended by a hanging basket hook!!! Dont know if you can see under the top table is another torty table, this has a strip light in, suspended by cup hooks and is about 6 inches off substrate. Hope this helps Vivienne PS the lamps have silver foil over them to protect our eyes, you can just see the strip light with foil on in top pic

Hi Andy thanks,
For interest just add different substrates rocks, bark, hides and plants etc. Over the TRex I have put foil to protect our eyes. I did use a reflector but the lamp kept cutting out (safety switch) so I took it off and its ok now. You dont need a cage think thats more for reptiles that might climb by it. I got the heat resistant cables from B&Q for couple of quid. And the ceramic holder was from Pets Parade where I got the bulb from, the flood is the best to get it spread the uv further, a wider raduis than the spot. I leave mine on all day if torties arnt outside, havent had any problems, just make sure you dont put hay or anything combustible too close. The other two lights are the basking lamps, they are clamp on lamps from Ikea (£2.50) with spot bulbs in (40 wat) incase it gets cold, but havent had to use them since Jan/Feb. And yes the torties go under the lamp to warm up in the mornings before I put them outside. I turn the trex off then. Vivienne

Andy..... I sympathise with you....
I was given exactly the same 'wrong' advice by pet shops.. I am SO pleased I found this site. I have seen Viv's tort tables tonight in real life... they are fab - she sets a great example. I also bought the 'amazing' pelletts £10's worth... I should have bought £10's weed's! You are doing the right thing by asking all the quesions you are asking.... ! |
