shellys hinge

As requested when i first joined the site, here are a few piccys of shellys hinge, sorry if they are a little bit i have no idea how to make them smaller and craig (the other half) aint here to help me, lol!

you wouldnt happen to have any pics of them actually 'closing' the hinge. sorry to ask its just ive never seen a hingeback properly before.

funny you should say that i was going to draw a big arrow to it, so people knew where it was, lol!

see the top piccy... between the fourth and fifth pattern on his shell, theres like s knotch.... well thats it, and it goes upwards then for about an inch (hard to explain, lol)

im afraid i havent got any of it closing, ill keep an eye out though and try and get snappy with the camera when it does, hehe!

Thanks Zoe! its so interesting I have never seen a hinge back tort before! what is the purpse of the hinge? where do they originate from?

Sorry for all the questions but I am fasinated, they are so beautiful

the bottom one is an African hingeback tortoise. ( so i asume Africa!! ) Which there are 4 differen't species of and the other one is a western.

the hinge is just another saftey thing. So they can hide away better.. and i guess not have their bums bitten!

I also found this whcih i thought was interesting.
"Hingeback tortoises should not be hibernated! They will require warm and moist vivarium accommodation over winter."

Also, about diet
"Unlike most land tortoises, African hinge-back tortoises are omnivorous and are insectivores. In the wild their diets include snails, slugs, millipedes as well as fallen fruits, grasses and plants. In captivity all three commonly encountered species generally enjoy earthworms, mealworms, slugs, bananas, tomatoes, peaches, mushrooms, lettuce, melon and sliced orange"
