I have had successful hatches five times, then my tortoise partner took the phayrei home with him to San Diego, CA, where the weather is more suitable for this species. I now only have a full grown pair of the M emys emys, a slightly smaller sub species. This female only started laying eggs two years ago. The first year she broke all the eggs as she was covering the nest (they make above the ground nests like alligators) and the second year she laid all the eggs in their waterer and I didn't see it in time to rescue them.

The reason the water looks so dirty is because she back scraped dirt from her yard to cover the eggs in the water.

That is really interesting I have M emys emys and one of my females has laid three times the first time I didn't realise until much too late but the last twice Gordon has tried to hatch them without success. It is amazing how many eggs they lay in one go and maybe this year if she lays either I or Gordon will have some success.
