New Book recommendation
Just finished reading an excelent new book on Gopher Tortoises!
"The natural history and management of the Gopher Tortoise" by Ray and Patricia Ashton. The pair, who are well known Field Biologists in the USA, have fianally published their work on this fascinating species,Gopherus polyphemus. With their complex lives involving the famous burrows, this species and its study details the interaction between other animals in groups, or pods, and the cohabitants, such as a unique frog and mouse species. It provides an insight into burrowing habits which are seen in other species such as the African Sulcata and the ubiquitous Horsefield's Tortoise. For anyone interested in learning more about the natural biology of these animals, and perhaps adapting some of or own husbandry techniques to other burrowing species, this book is well worth reading. There is also a fascinating account of how the species has colonised the barrier islands in the Mexican Gulf and survived inundation from Hurricane/Storm surge!- (Carapace Cruise). The book is published by Krieger and can be obtained here in the UK from JG Natural history Books. |
