Hi Reaper. Topsoil is ok to use and I expect a bag from B and M is much the same as any other.

It states it's sterilised so worth a try, Reaper.

I'm not sure what is meant by 'screened' topsoil, it might be that it's screened for broken glass, bits of metal etc but anyway that's what I got from a garden centre. It was a brand name like John Innes or Westland or something I think but it was excellent stuff even if a couple of quid more overall (£12 for 3 as opposed to £10 for 3). I've had good and bad stuff from Homebase, Wickes, B&Q, and B&M Bargains in the past. I was getting good stuff from B&Q then suddenly I got some with broken glass and bits of wood in. I got some at Aldi once and it was really bad so never tried it again

I think as long as no addictives it will be fine but you can always sieve it. I like Alan have had some good ones and bad ones. If you think about it there can only be so much top soil in the country because when does it become something else. The only think I don't like is that when wet it is a lot heavier than say coco coir. CB

Where I lived previously there was a field behind my house that they built new houses on and the first thing they did was take all the topsoil away in hundreds of lorry loads. They scrape it down a few feet until the hard soil is reached. That was a field which was always crops except one year they had sheep in it over a 36 year period. I assume it would be good quality with very little broken glass etc.
There will be building sites though that were maybe previously waste ground that could have lots of rubbish in it. It will all be sieved no doubt but possibly some will get through. There will be firms who buy that topsoil then process it and supply places like Homebase, Wickes, B&Q etc possibly with the very same soil but just in different bags. There's a potato factory near me and they supply the likes of Tesco, Morrisons and Asda with the same spuds but in each firm's own bags and people actually say oh Tesco's ones are far better than Asda's ones |
