Ross how far away from the tortoise do you have your halogens mounted and are they like this one: http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/702837/?source=123_75
or this : http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/702857/?source=123_75 Also interested in how you go about mounting the units. thanks Jonathan

Indoors, I use them combined with the Arcadia T5 slimline luminaire, I simply slide the bracket over the luminaire. I will warn you now though, there is one major flaw in this method! The security lamps get hot, real hot. The problem here is that it being so close to the slimline fitting it does heat the slimline fitting up over the recommended usage temperature. I haven't had any failures though and have used this method for well over 6 months. They're probably about one foot above the tortoise, but the design of these lamps means the footprint is massive. Easily big enough to effectively heat an adult Med. tortoise evenly. I've just re-read what I've written, not sure I've explained it well so I have taken a photo.

Great info Ross - thanks! Yeah I did wonder if there could be a heat build - up issue in a confined space.
But aside from indoors use, this could work great inside my small plexiglass greenhouses.

Looks good Ross. What do you have the lamps fixed to in that photo?
And do you use a dimming stat in there as well?

No stat in there, I don't really worry about the temperature in there as the tortoises can come and go as they wish. If the basking area is too worm they either move to the cooler side or leave the cold frame. The lamp is on a timer and is really only used early spring and late summer.

i use these halogen lamps in my outside cold frame to good effect,i also use a dimming stat to govern temps,i have found that without a dimmerstat the bulbs get too hot and have a very short life.
