Help wanted for cat problem!
Hi everyone
I have a couple of 1 year old Hermann's in a decent open top tortoise table. However, we have a problem with one of our cats who keeps trying to jump in with the torts and maybe use the table as a litter tray. I wondered about putting a perspex or toughened glass cover on top with a number of air holes drilled in. What does everyone thing about this? Does it essentially turn it into a glass viv with all its attendant humidity problems? Any advice/solutions (other than getting rid of the cat!!) ? |

I dont know how handy you are with DIY but could you make a lid with a wire mesh? that could solve the problem.

Thanks for this. I did consider the wire mesh but thought that it would obscure seeing the torts.
Do you have problems with cats bothering tortoises indoors? Mine have had a good look at them and don't quite know what to make of them. I just want to head off any potential problems in the future. Thanks |

I think a frame with chicken wire sounds like a plan.
My cat will get in my indoor table if he gets the chance, and bask under the lamp, but has never used it as a littertray thank goodness. The torts that go in it are a fair size and not in any danger. If I had little ones in it then I would put some sort of protection over it, a cat could easily use a baby tort as a plaything and do some damage IMO |

Yes I use a wire top over hatchlings just in case and you can get a 1"mesh that doesn't obscure so much

As Bindi says...its the same sort of thing that I said on emmas post on the Med section, about similar things. Cats do see little things as play objects, its a risk albeit a small one, I realise. So....
I would say as suggested a mesh lid. You will not do the air flow or temperature gradient any good with a perspex or glass lid. It would get too hot I would think. xx Good Luck |

Thanks for all the comments. Looks like wire mesh is the way to go. Will keep you posted.
