Here's another link for sexing horsfields (I think it has more pictures and a bit more information than the Chelonia UK one):

Hi, thanks for that last link, it's actually helped me a lot...well sort of. Ethel's tail has widened slightly since I got her a couple of months ago so I was beginning to think she may be a boy but from the size of the females tail on that, it is still in proportion to that despite the recent growth so I'm back to thinking she could easily be either lol, oh and her cloaca definitely still resembles an asterisk *. I should stop guessing really until she's old enough to determine exactly what sex she is. Oh well, we'll see if a name change is in order in a couple of years......

Thanks again!

Default help please

Hello, i am so confused, i bought my first horsefield about 3 months ago i was told she was a girl, i recently went on holiday and a friend of mine who allready has a horsefield looked after her and she said she thought dhe was a male, i work in a vets and one of the vets looked at her when she brought her back and he thought she is a male too. I went to a pet shop the other day and saw some there that he buys from a breeder (he has name and address), I had a look at them and he said they were females i decided to buy one, brought it home and she looks exactly the same as my other one. They are both said to be 2 years old 06 babies, have looked at loads of sexing photos but am finding it hard to decide what they are perhaps cos of the age, i was wondering if anyone has any 2 year olds they could take photos of so i could check the differences. Despartley need to find out what sex they are as i have heard to males might fight, they have shown no aggression to each other yet, they are living together in a tortoise table. sue

Are there any others for the Hermanns because the pictures look so small on my laptop that I can't make anything out.

BTW, one of mine has a tiny hole on the underside too

The breeder said they were from a mixed clutch,a lady i know had him/herbut her dog attacked Grace and as she wasnt perfect she wasnt wanted,so she sold her to me for £45.She was fed on lettuce and cucumber and took 6 weeks to conince her to eat weeds, her wounds have healed niceley nowand I will look after her
