The sand is sharp sand and mixed with rocks, stones etc and quite solid, it's not the dusty sort ha ha, x

Rate of growth is definately not a factor in pyramiding. It is as simple as providing the proper conditions for the boundry edges between the scutes to develop properly.

Tortoise behavior is also a factor. For some reason a tortoise will either not eat or drink or choose a good heat source for some reason... given the option.
