Hi Chris,
I don't understand this bit "the second vertebral scute on the carapace will dip into the first vertebral like a "U" shape." Would it be possible to make on computer highlighted line where exactly is the U shape? (I think I am lacking imagination).

Thank you!

Hi there mate!

Whilst we wait for Chris to come on and help out, just checking that you have already seen his pages here :http://www.hermannihaven.com/#!sicilian-tortoises/chld

Good photos and descriptions.

Hi Ozric,
Yes I have seen this web page. I love it!

But I am not a specialist and struggle to find which bit is the second vertebral scute and what U shape it is making, and in comparison how different it would be with a tortoise from a different locality where it doesn't do the 'U shape'.

Thanks Jonathan for posting the link.

Here's a quick photo diagram I just made showing how the 2nd vertebral scute is straight edged on a hermanni from Var (south France) or most mainland Italian specimens and how it dips down like a "U" into the first vertebral on the tortoise on the right which is typical of Corse, Sardinian and Sicilian tortoises. It is most commonly seen in Corse hermanni.

Thank you, Chris! I have read so many times the advice about the U shape and always wondered where exactly is the scute and which bit is in the U shape. You are really brilliant!!!!!
