Concerned about flaky shell?
He's got a few knocks over the years climbing in the garden, but these areas have gotten more flaky over time. Can anyone recommend a cream or something to help reduce the flaking please? or is this shell rot? I would take him to the vets but they're only taking on emergencys.

Never put cream on flaking shells:0)
Diluted F 10 or diluted betadine to stop any bacteria setting in under flaking shells is all you need. And only now and again:0)

I use any brand of cream for athletes foot as it is fungal it will kill it off but only use it on infected areas not all over. Put it on once a week for three or four weeks even if it's not shell rot try it as it won't do any harm.

Feel better applying F10 cream than diluting betadine. Ok I'll order the F10 cream from Amazon. Should I clean his shell with a toothbrush or just leave the flaky area alone and just apply a small amount of cream?

Diluted F10 is that a cream or a spray? How do I apply it please? I've found an F10 cream on Amazon do I just apply a small cue tip size amount to the area?

Yes or just put a bit on your finger and rub it in.
Diluted f10 will be a liquid so not as precise use the cream and then keep it in the fridge or somewhere cool as it is good for other things like cuts etc. Last edited by Gordon; 03-04-2020 at 06:11 PM. |

The picture's so big it's hard to get the proper perspective, but I'm thinking this is on the side of the carapace? Nothing needs to be done about it. It's not fungus or shell rot, as those almost always are caused by the tortoise sitting constantly in dirty, wet substrate, poop or pee, hence it will first show up on the plastron, not the carapace.
Your tortoise's shell damage is old and will always look like that. There's no need to do anything. It's not harmful nor painful to him, and it's not going to get any worse unless he keeps knocking it on something hard. Is it in an area where he continuously bangs it as he walks along the edge of a stone wall or the stucco house, something like that?
