Interesting alternative to tubular heater
http://www.brewtime.co.uk/show_book....id=55&secid=61
Came across this & thought it looked interesting - compact plus it has built in thermostat. Decent price too! |

Great call that. Would be interested if anyone fancied having a go with one. The price exc. VAT but even so, way cheaper than a tubular heater.

I'm after an outdoor weatherproof heater but never been able to find one. It would be under cover but not completely protected from the weather, there may be dampness and or mist etc but it'd mostly protected from rain. Anyone ever come across one?

At the beginning of the year I started a conversation about outside security lamps, we were a bit concerned about the chances of over UVC exposure but experiments were done with spectrometer and a UVC meter which proved these were safe as long as the glass was in place and not damaged, these are used for outside and give off a wide beam which again is excellent. I tried a 120watt one which was only £5 but didn't feel it was giving off enough heat but a friend also tried one and said it was great so I started looking for another, I would like to try one with around a 200watt mark as 500watts is gonna eat more electric.
I haven't had a chance to test any more for heat this year but will start again next year, these are much cheaper than normal basking lamps, hell you can buy a whole new unit cheaper than the normal basking lamps we are used too. These work and are safe, get ones from B&Q etc so you know they are tested and have the safety mark on them. It must be the Halogen bulb type to give off heat. Cheap, waterproof and safe, you could put it anyway outside. This is the type Im talking about.............. http://www.diy.com/nav/decor/lightin...light-12067558 If anyone trys a 200watter etc please let me know your temperature findings Would just like to say I didn't do the testing and I would like to thank Frances and Rom for doing this for me. I was talking about a weatherproof tubular heater.
I did try a 300w security type light 2 years ago and although it was very hot indoors, it was hopeless outside even under cover, the heat just disappeared instantly with any draughts |

You can get waterproof tubular heaters Alan.. Have a look for the ones which are designed for use in greenhouses.

I dot one of these yesterday to give a stable background and night temp for Teabag, seems to be keeping a stable 20°C for her nicely!
