Default Hibernating

Just lifted my tortoise to see if it's ok and it opened its eyes....... Does that mean that it's not hibernating!
Thanks

Nope... it does not mean that it is not hibernating.

Tortoises are reptiles... They do no truely hibernate as mammals do. They do not go to sleep as such. The temperature is dropped so that is metabolism slows down so that it needs very little energy which allows it to make it through the winter.

Many people also call this brumating.

As long as it is inactive... it should be fine.
