A friend of mine popped in to see me this afternoon, I asked her if she watched Galápagos , not yet, she said " but I've recorded it" she said " I thought it might make me a bit tearful, because of the wonderful time we had when we went"
And " yes we did see lonesome George ". ummph

Yes I met poor old Lonesome when I was there as our boat had blown up before we arrived so we were lucky enough to be able to stay in a hotel on Santa Cruz and then go out daily on boats to the other islands. In our spare time we were able to walk up the road to the Charles Darwin Research Station a real treat.

Loved the programme and the torts were just wonderful. Amazing the hatchlings seem to disappear. I'm definitely going to find out more about the islands - potential bucket list I think.

Isn't it interesting, they talked about the hatchlings disaapearing for several years, so very little is known about them, which is what we have often discussed on here, when explaining to new keepers, that hatchlings spend very little time out in the open basking, and very little is known about their lives.

That's right and so many dangers for the babies out in the open. They used to incubate a lot of eggs at the research station and then release the tortoises when they were about five years old but not sure whether they still do that.

I only saw it last night but thoroughly enjoyed it. What about the pink iguana?
Poignant that things are in grave danger of being lost. Did you see the size of the hawks? Bet they would pray on baby torts. Its definately a survival instinct to hide until you get bigger! Thats why I think its important to add lots of plants & hides to hatchling areas, they feel safer x Last edited by burnt toast; 02-04-2017 at 11:48 PM. |
