Happy New Year ... a bad start
Like many I hoped that 2012 would be a better one ... but not so far
It all started at 9pm last night ... the 1st January Parents phoned me whilst I was in the middle of Harry Potter! My mother had lost the use of her legs and was stuck in the chair downstairs, unable to weight bare. Faced with no toilet and no bed … they rang me in trouble. I have been asking for months/years what they intended to do to solve this problem when the day came. Now … they need a solution instantly! It's BH and everyone is closed. We had the ambulance out after 11pm. She had high blood pressure and an irregular heart rate. They wanted her in hospital but she refused. I offered to have her here so she could sleep in a bed downstairs and use the downstairs toilet … she refused. The care people and the ambulance left after midnight and we got home at 01.00 this morning. I now have to find a commode and a sofa bed … today! Happy New Year ... not quite

Your mum sounds very independant. Have you tried calling the red cross, I'm sure they can help with comodes etc. My nan got her equipment she needed from the local council. Good luck, hopefully things will get better xx

It took eighteen months after my dad's strokes until he agreed to move from a house into a bungalow. He was so independent and was determined to manage and to drive again. Of course, that proved impossible but he had to come to terms with it in his own time, no matter how frustrating that was for my mum and I.
They've now been in a bungalow for 15 months and it's just as well as he's very immobile and barely manages with his zimmer. I'm certain that he'll need to go in a wheelchair as the year progresses and this would have been completely impossible in the house they had. I really empathise with you as it's so very difficult telling them what to do when they can't see it themselves. I hope you get some help asap. Get the GP out and insist they tell you what you're entitled to. If your mum gets admitted to hospital, the occupational therapist should assess the home before she leave hospital. Good luck!

Really sorry to hear this Wendy, I hope you get the equipment you need and your mum feels better soon. I know it's a really difficult time for you and your family it's so hard to see your parents grow older, they are lucky to have you.

Can nhs direct help? Or social services. I know it's pants getting medical help during holidays. I have an ear infection and had to cross over the border to Essex on Saturday to get help. Try nhs direct.

Good to see lots of smiley faces on your post. Hopefully this will make a huge difference both to your mum and dad and you and your stress levels.
Hope she's doing okay since Sunday.
